Anne Downton
CREATIVE

I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Visual Arts, degree from Memorial University,
Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in 2006. My art has been primarily concentrated in the
media of printmaking and painting; however, I have also explored photography,
mixed media and digital video quite extensively. Much of my art has explored the
idea of layers of history and memories being revealed in various ways and how this
has an impact on our emotion states -- through architectural surface deterioration,
juxtaposition of abstraction with representation and the creation of physical layers
within the pieces. My art is an exploration and expression of an aesthetic, an aesthetic
that defines movement through time, memory and emotion.
Since graduating from Memorial University I have completed two curating assignments
with First Space Gallery. These were Assembly Required, 2006, and Segment, 2007. I
was also fortunate enough to be the recipient of the 2006/2007 Don Wright Scholarship
awarded from St. Michael’s Print Shop for an emerging artist. I have been working as a
freelance artist for the past several years, participating in numerous solo and group
exhibitions, as well as concentrating on both commission and personal bodies of work.
My art is also a part of numerous private, corporate and provincial permanent
collections. I have spent the last number of years working as a professional graphic
designer and creative director as well in the non profit sector and I have also completed
a number of interior design projects. Being in a creative space is where I feel at home.
